After living in the country side for years, I moved to the city and in the springtime I always miss the cries of the homecoming common cranes. It was the real sound of spring telling me that the winter was finally over. The artwork is born of this longing for common cranes.
In the original artwork, I combined patchwork techniques, free machine embroidery and acrylic painting.

The night landscape and the full moon speak to me. The work conveys the mystical atmosphere of the garden of Eden at night. The hypnotic moon of Eden illuminates the moor with the tree of good and evil and the tree of life.
The color shades changes, the machine-embroidered lines and the pattern of the moon’s surface form a balanced whole.

I once spent a Christmas in Lapland. Northern Lights flamed and the temperature out dropped to almost -30 degrees Celsius at night. The grey sturdy timber walls of our cottage parted us from the chilling cold. A lovely warm, luminous fire blazed in a soapstone fireplace.

Winter girl drives across Lapland with her dog sled, bringing an illuminating snow cover when she arrives. A beautiful weave of stars and snowflakes shimmers against the dark night sky.
The artwork was inspired by the Christmas concert of the a cappella ensemble Rajaton. The original artwork is woven with a loom combining picking and traditional weave patterns.
In the sky of the artwork there is a traditional weave pattern called ”karhunkäpälä” (meaning the bear’s paw). This pattern has fascinated me for a long time. It and its variants can be found in old museum textiles all over Europe. It’s like an old folk tale that has traveled from village to village as an unwritten tradition.
